Wastewaters often being highly concentrated with pollutants including carbon (BOD, COD, TOC), nitrogen (TKN, NH4, NO3, TN), phosphorus (PO4, TP), fats/oils/greases (FOG), particles (TSS), and many more components in varying concentrations.
These high-pollutant loads increase the cost of treatment and may require significant storage volume for equalization of raw influent. On the other hand, possibilities are available to recover such nutrients, to produce biogas or to reuse (part of) the wastewater.
